About Us

The study of theology embraces diverse interests: Some want to come to a deeper intellectual grasp of what it is that they believe and their reasons for believing it; others seek a form of rigorous inquiry into basic human questions, while yet others study theology because the Jewish and Christian traditions have had such vast influence on the Western culture in which we live, ranging from the realms of literature, visual arts and music to the realms of social, political, and ethical reflection. As practiced at Loyola, theology embraces these diverse interests and engages a variety of texts drawn from scripture, the Christian tradition, and the contemporary world. It brings those texts into dialogue with voices from non-Christian religious traditions and the secular world. Whatever a student's own faith might be, the study of theology provides a crucial perspective for understanding both the past and our present.
