Please join the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in collaboration with The Natural and Applied Sciences' Celebration of Science Week, for an evening celebrating women in Mathematical Sciences!

At 6 pm Professor Chikako Messe, Department of Mathematics, Johns Hopkins University, will give the talk 'Riemannian Geometry: A journey through curved spaces' (see abstract below)

At 6:30 pm there will be a screening of the film 'Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani'. The film explores the life of the first woman and first Iranian to win the Fields Medal.

'Riemannian Geometry: a journey through curved spaces'

Abstract: A central notion in the mathematical discipline of Riemannian Geometry is curvature. In this talk, we embark on a journey to understand the notion of curvature by studying an example of a two-dimensional surface: the Earth. We will discuss how the ancient Greeks used the curvature of the Earth to measure its size. Additionally, we will explore how curvature plays a role in cartography, the art and science of creating maps. We will examine the challenges and limitations of accurately representing the Earth on a flat surface. Lastly, we will venture into Riemannian geometry, where these foundational ideas are extended and generalized into higher-dimensional spaces, offering insights into the nature of curvature and its implications.
