Sixteen Years is a documentary by filmmaker Jia Rizvi that follows the wrongful conviction, incarceration, exoneration, and subsequent advocacy work of Jeffrey Deskovic. In 1990, 17-year-old Jeff was wrongfully convicted of the murder of a 15-year-old classmate. He would spend 16 years in prison for a crime he did not commit before his exoneration in 2006 at the age of 32. Following the screening, both Jeff and Jia will be participating in a moderated panel discussion with opportunities for audience members to ask questions. The evening will conclude with a reception where light refreshments will be provided.

The film highlights topics that would be of interest to a broad range of students, discussing individual and systemic consequences of wrongful convictions, harmful interrogation practices, false and coerced confessions, the psychological effects of incarceration, and the barriers exonerees face after release. A short trailer of the documentary can be found on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg63wHH8kio.

This event is supported by Peace and Justice Studies, in collaboration with Messina and the Department of Forensic Science. Questions can be directed to Professor Marion Davidson at mdavidson2@loyola.edu.
