Transitioning from graduate training to the the life of Professional School Counselor can be both exciting and overwhelming. In this alumni panel, recent graduates share candid insights about their first year in the field—what surprised them, what challenged them, and what ultimately helped them thrive. This interactive discussion offers a supportive and honest look at the first-year experience and provides valuable takeaways for current students preparing to enter the profession. This session is meant for counselors-in-training.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1) Identify common challenges and growth areas encountered during the first year as a school counselor.
2) Describe effective strategies for interviewing for school counseling positions as well as for advocating for your role and needs as a first year school counselor.
3) Develop realistic expectations about the first-year experience, including the emotional, relational, and systemic aspects of working in schools.
