Mission
Iota Iota Iota, Triota, is a National Women's Studies Honor Society with over 80 chapters nationwide. Iota Iota Iota strives to maintain the feminist values central to Women's Studies and encourage diversity, egalitarianism, and a supportive academic environment for all students
The purpose of Tri Iota is to honor excellence in the academic pursuit of Women's Studies, Gender Studies, and Sexuality Studies among students on the Loyola University Maryland campus.
Tri-iota supports an intersectional approach to the study of gender and sexuality that encompasses class, race, ability, age and other differences on the Loyola campus. This organization supports volunteerism, advocacy, and activism within the Loyola community as important methods for promoting and maintaining feminist values and increasing the safety for all students.
The Alpha Chapter of Iota Iota Iota, Triota, at Metropolitan State University of Denver held its first induction ceremony in the fall of 1992.
The Greek letter, iota, was selected for the name to represent the three goddesses Inanna, Ishtar, and Isis. Southern Connecticut State University provides the following description of them:
Inanna, Ishtar, and ISIS
Inanna
Inanna was one of the primary deities of Sumer, a civilization that flourished from around 3500 BCE to 2500 BCE. She was known as the queen of the land, the source of the earth's life blood. According to some stories, she renewed her virginity each year by descending into the underworld. Mary Daly, who has reinterpreted many words referring to women, suggests that a virgin may be thought of as a wild, lusty, unsubdued woman.
Ishtar
Ishtar was the great goddess of Babylonia, a civilization located in the south of present-day Iraq from around 1800 to 1000 BCE. Ishtar - or Star - was the Light of the World, the Lawgiver, Queen of all Men. Mary Daly might call her the Audacious Truthsayer: unafraid, naming the problems, boldly telling the Truth.
Isis
Isis was the primary goddess of ancient Egypt, beginning around 3000 BCE. Worship of Isis lasted well into the first millenium of the Christian Era, and many believe she became identified with Christianity's virgin mother Mary. Isis was the goddess from whom all else arose - the Creator, the Giver of Life, the Mother of All
