Her artistic process involves carefully selecting, deconstructing, and reassembling archival materials, reflecting how we piece together our understanding of family history and personal identity. Sterling-Wilson, as the author of her own narrative, preserves her lineage by integrating elements from her family archives and actively shapes its continuing story. Through intimate scenes captured in her childhood home, she builds upon her family archive to explore shared memories.
The collages and photographs in "The Sterlings" bridge the past and present, emphasizing the intergenerational connections that define familial bonds. Through layered imagery and textures, Sterling-Wilson invites viewers to actively engage and reflect on their own relationships with family, culture, and traditions.
Agenda
Past Events
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
As part of Sterling-Wilson’s artist residency, she will be conducting a series of three collage workshops. These workshops are designed to allow participants to explore ways of physically manipulating a photograph. Collage promotes creative thinking, develops visual literacy, encourages experimentation, and is an accessible medium. Exploring different ways to evoke feelings and thoughts through a photograph (by writing on images, tearing, sewing, juxtaposing other images or materials, for example), participants will connect to Sterling-Wilson’s work as well to work by other collage artists in history that have inspired her work. All supplies will be provided. The workshop is meant to be taken as a full series, but we welcome participants who can only attend one or two sessions as well!
