Safe Zone at Loyola University Maryland fosters an affirming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans & gender non-conforming, non-binary, queer, pansexual, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQPIA+) members of the University community and their allies. In support of the University's mission to promote intellectual excellence and ethical leadership in the Jesuit tradition, Safe Zone at Loyola:
- Cultivates dialogue, understanding, and fellowship among all University community members around LGBTQ+ issues and contributions
- Sponsors designated Safe Zones around campus that offer safety, support, and confidentiality for LGBTQ+ students and their allies
- Offers training to faculty, staff, administrators, and students on how to fully welcome, support, and value LGBTQ+ people and perspectives in the University community
Becoming Safe Zone trained at Loyola is a three-step process. Training sessions should be completed in order and upon completion of Session 3, participants have the opportunity to sign a commitment to contributing to an affirming campus for LGBTQ+ members. When you see a Safe Zone decal on campus, it indicates that person completed the entirety of Loyola's Safe Zone program.
Some people complete the Safe Zone program over the course of a month, while many others choose to complete it over the course of a few years when they feel ready to take each step in the process.

To what extent do the principles of the Declaration of Independence live on in the age of Donald Trump? In the wake of the 2024 election, the Declaration’s grievances circulated online as evidence of the United States’s foundational anti-monarchical politics even as the newly inaugurated President declared that he would “restore truth and sanity to American history” by, in part, emphasizing the “unparalleled legacy of advancing liberty, individual rights, and human happiness.” The meaning of the Declaration of Independence remains very much contested 250 years after it was written. As we prepare to engage this text as a community for the 2026 Humanities Symposium, join experts from the History Department in a conversation about the historical legacies of the Declaration of Independence, its significance at the time, and its relevance today. Panelists include Dr. Janna Haider on citizenship and the law, Matt Mulcahy on the early Republic, and Dr. Oghenetoja Okoh on the global significance of the Declaration. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Andrew Israel Ross.
A forensics-themed escape room has made its way to McGuire Hall. It's a race-against-the-clock whodunnit as you and your team search for clues to try to find the killer. The experience takes one hour to complete and multiples of the same escape room will be run at once to maximize the amount of students who are able to experience it. This first round will begin promptly at 5:00pm. Please show up with your entire team to McGuire Hall at 4:45pm
Please register and show up in groups of either 5 or 6. 6 is the maximum per group. No exceptions. If you're registering with your entire Messina section, please expect to be in 3 different groups. We will NOT have time to find you a group for those registering solo. This is an event you should register in advance with a group - much like how you would if you and your friends were planning a trip to an escape room off-campus. Space is limited so if you register and then are unable to participate, please cancel your registration. Messina will be following up with those registered often in the month of November.
Please do not register for both Round 1 and Round 2. It's the same escape room and our vendor needs time to reset in between groups.
Come enjoy a family style meal with your MESA family before Thanksgiving! For $10, you can enjoy a taste of each region across the Middle East and South Asia. Come with an appetite and leave with a full stomach.
