As we near the end of the fall semester, many of us are navigating a range of emotions following the 2024 election cycle, and as a member of the Green Bandana Brigade, you may have found yourself offering support to friends, peers, family, and colleagues. Polarization, media overload, and a sense of uncertainty or loss of control can increase feelings of stress. It’s important to keep in mind ways that we can care for our own needs as we seek to help others in our lives as well. Check out the post-election tips below for ideas:
Boundaries:
Silence your notifications for news apps so that you can control how and when you want to see them
Take breaks from screens and avoid doom-scrolling to limit exposure to distressing content
If you find yourself in a challenging conversation about politics, try pivoting away from a polarizing conversation – for example:
“I respect your right to your viewpoint, but I’m just not in the right mind frame to talk about this right now.”
Emphasize values rather than a party or a person
Connection:
Make time for yourself to do things you enjoy
Spend time in community with those who affirm and value who you are
Reach out for support from campus resources as needed
Let’s Talk Sessions are offered by the Counseling Center as a solution focused, one-time appointment to address any immediate needs
Remember, campus resources are available, and the wellness events listed below may offer opportunities for self-care, restoration, and connection. Create a post-election action plan (see QR code in the right-side information bar) to identify ways you can be intentional about self-care, connect in community, and become more aware of ways you might get involved in causes that align with your values.
Now that you have completed the Vector or Kognito training and are officially a part of the Green Bandana Brigade, you will want to show off your own green bandana! Bring your Kognito certificate to the Counseling Center to receive your green bandana and a set of resource cards. After you've received your bandana don't hesitate to show it off by putting it in your office, on your backpack or bag, or anywhere you see fit.
