6. Class of 2028: Declaration of Major Process

AASC opened up the declaration of major process for Class of 2028 on Monday.  As a reminder, all students must officially declare their major, even if they indicated an intended major in the past.

Students who are ready to officially declare their major can fill out the Declaration of Major form (they have been emailed a fillable copy already) and then receive their Messina advisor's signature on the form (or email approval). Students should then bring the form to AASC in MH138.

Students who are not ready to officially declare their major may request an exploratory advisor to work with them in the third semester. This exploratory advisor will help students consider their strengths and interests, possible majors, and connect them with appropriate resources on campus that can assist with the discernment process.  Students who would like to request an exploratory advisor should follow the instructions provided in the email on Monday.

All students will continue to work with their Messina advisors through the end of the spring semester.  In the summer, AASC will email students the name of their major or exploratory advisor who will work with them in the future.

If you have any questions, please email aasc@loyola.edu or vlgue@loyola.edu

Mission Week

4:30 pm to 6:30 pm – Inaugural Founders Forum -- The Scruples of St. Ignatius of Loyola: Exploring the Intersection of History, Theology, and Modern Psychological Science

The Founders’ Forum is an annual Mission Week event that explores our Jesuit and Ignatian roots in conversation with contemporary issues and subjects through the expertise and experience of Loyola University’s own distinguished faculty. In this inaugural gathering, St. Ignatius’s struggle with scrupulosity will be explored in conjunction with the contemporary psychological understanding of and clinical approach to scruples. We hope the event will both deepen our understanding of our Jesuit heritage and our sensitivity towards an important mental health challenge. Father Steve Spahn, SJ of the Jesuit community and Theology Department will sketch what we know historically of Ignatius’s struggle with scruples. Dr. Gina Magyar-Russell of the Psychology Department will present the contemporary understanding of this disorder and how clinicians endeavor to treat it. A reception will precede and follow the presentation.

Location: 4th Floor Programming Room

Commitment to Justice: Women and Justice

Loyola Maryland’s commitment to justice is rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church, which proclaims that the life and dignity of the human person is the foundational principle of its social teaching. As Pope Francis has shared, this principle calls us to recognize and celebrate the dignity of all people regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, talent, or birthplace.

However, this vision of dignity has not been reflected in the lives of all women throughout the world. Too many women have been and continue to be marginalized economically, financially, socially, and professionally, while their gifts, intellect, and contributions have been devalued and at times disregarded. The pervasive effects of sexism have resulted in a spiritual impoverishment of humanity. How can we elevate the voices and experiences of women in ways that recognize and celebrate their inherent dignity?

We invite the Loyola community to listen carefully and courageously to the experience of women. The panel will bring together women to speak on intersectionality, disparities in health care, disparities in pay equity, and challenge us to be contemplatives in action.
