Join the Art History Program and Loyola Notre Dame Library for "The Extra Dimension: Sister Mary John de Matha: Artist, Teacher, Nun", a LNDL exhibition curated by Kristine Andal, ’26! A German-American sculptor and educator who taught at Notre Dame of Maryland University for 27 years, Sister Mary John de Matha Bersch trained in fine arts and was deeply committed to both artistic practice and teaching. She worked across materials including metal, wood, and stone to explore form, spirituality, and public space. The exhibition highlights her contributions as both an artist and educator, while also recovering her legacy within LNDL's archival collections.

Kristine Andal is a senior art history major at Loyola. This exhibition is the culmination of her intensive independent study, which was guided by Jennifer Kinnif, Head of Archives and Special Collections at LNDL, Dr. Kerry Boeye, Associate Professor of Art History. Kristine researched the history of religious women as artists and explored Notre Dame of Maryland University’s Artwork Collection and Faculty Collection, as well as the rare book collection. The intensive independent study provided Kristine with the opportunity to learn how archives and special collections acquire, process, preserve, and provide access to art- and artist-related collections, and to place the LNDL’s collections in historical context.
