IDEA Spotlights

In each newsletter, the Office of Equity and Inclusion highlights individuals within Loyola who are working to make our campus an inclusive and welcoming place for all people. In this edition, we are spotlighting Tatiana Bazile, Liam Morris, Gabbriell Reason, and H. Jay Dunmore.

Tatiana Bazile (she/her)

President of the National Black Association of Speech-Language-Hearing (NBASLH) Affiliate Chapter at Loyola University Maryland

Tatiana Bazile is a second-year graduate student at Loyola University Maryland. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Science education program in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) and is expected to graduate in May 2024. Tatiana also holds the position of president of the National Black Association of Speech-Language-Hearing (NBASLH) Affiliate Chapter at Loyola. NBASLH is a nonprofit organization with a mission to maintain a viable mechanism through which the needs of Black professionals, students, and individuals with communication disorders can be met.

At Loyola, NBASLH provides a multimodal safe space for graduate and undergraduate students of color by offering mentor/mentee services and support. Members recently organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive Collection, donating the proceeds to the Govans Community Fridge. Additionally, they participated in the Step Up for Down Syndrome fundraiser, provided monthly meetings and mentorship for first-year graduate SLP students, engaged in promoting the field of SLP at high school career fairs, and volunteered at Gigi's Playhouse, a Center for Down Syndrome Children and Adults.

Tatiana has been honored with the NBALSH Culturally Responsive, Trauma Informed, Globally Engaged Scholarship, a scholarship presented to an undergraduate or graduate student of color in good standing and enrolled full-time in a speech-language pathology program. At Loyola, she is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) trainer for first-year BIPOC graduate students in the SLP master's program and serves as a graduate assistant for The Study.

Tatiana is an alumna of Temple University, where she not only pursued her academic journey, but also made a significant impact as an active board member of the Haitian Student Organization (HSO) and the co-founder of Sisters in Speech Therapy and Audiology, a collegiate organization focused on providing support, maintaining connections, and engaging Black speech therapy students and their clients.

Tatiana emphasizes the importance of DEIJ work by creating inclusive spaces where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background or identity, and where diversity is celebrated as a strength rather than a barrier. Tatiana believes that creating inclusive environments where people feel comfortable and valued is crucial on campus, in the community, and in other spaces.

Liam Morris (he/him)

Co-Chair of Community Service for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)

Liam Morris is a Senior at Loyola University Maryland and a captain on the Varsity Swim Team. As captain, he has assisted in fostering an environment where their team can succeed. He has connected his team to resources around campus, including volunteer opportunities, academic support, mental health services, etc. He has also helped in creating a smooth connection between the coaches and the athletes about the team's needs as swimmers. Liam is proud that his team was able to have one of the most successful years in program history, both athletically and academically.

In addition, Liam also serves as Co-chair of Community Service for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). As the chair of Community Service, Liam assists in communicating service opportunities, both on and off campus, to SAAC members. He connects with organizations off campus to create relationships between Loyola and nonprofits in the area. He also helps in keeping track of the hours that each member of SAAC volunteers throughout their time with the on-campus club.  Outside of his community service, he is also involved in the Title XI group for SAAC.

Liam is also a member of Student Athletes for Social Justice ( SA4SJ), an established student club that aims to promote the pursuit of social justice on Loyola's campus and in athletics. Members of SA4SJ use their platform as student-athletes to put on events at athletic games, as well as partner with many organizations on campus to promote messages of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

Since his sophomore year, Liam has spent his weekends volunteering as an assistant coach with the Baltimore Dolphins. The Dolphins are a Special Olympics team that practices at Gilman. On his days away from the FAC pool, he spends his time with athletes of different ability levels to work on stroke technique and swim meet preparation. Liam has created bonds with many of the athletes that he works with. The best part of his week is going to the Sunday practices and enjoying the sport that has brought him so much joy, but from a coaching perspective.

Last year, he was also a volunteer swim instructor with the Junior H2Ounds program, an after-school program hosted by CCSJ that allows students in the Baltimore area to spend time either learning how to swim or practicing their already developed skills.

This year, Liam works as an intern for the International Rescue Committee downtown. As a volunteer intern, he works in the economic empowerment division. At the IRC, he works with refugees, asylees, and parolees who recently have settled in the Baltimore area. The organization works to provide all types of services that assist people in establishing a foundation in the US. As an economic empowerment intern, he communicates with clients and helps them achieve economic and financial stability. He speaks with clients regarding their current employment situations, and if unemployed, he helps create professional resumes, gets in touch with potential jobs, and notifies them about training opportunities that are hosted at the IRC. Alongside his team, Liam helps with teaching new clients about the financial assistance that the organization can offer

Liam credits several on and off-campus organizations for his personal growth including Loyola's Center for Community, Service, and Justice (CCSJ), the Counselling Center, Student-Athletes Support Services (SASS), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and Special Olympics MD in the city of Baltimore.

When asked what motivates his passion for DEIJ work, Liam said, "I love connecting with people. I believe that the best way to achieve growth in any team or organization is through a goal of achieving equity for all. The above organizations that I work with all strive to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice both on our evergreen campus and in the city of Baltimore. The lessons that I have learned, from the people that I have, motivate me to continue with the work and organizations that I am a part of. The pursuit of social justice will lead me towards the professional decisions that I make in my career, both finishing this semester and beyond Loyola.".

Gabbriell Reason (she/her)

Assistant Director, Student-Athlete Support Services

Gabbriell Reason is the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Support Services at Loyola University Maryland. She plays a crucial role in supporting student-athletes academically by providing personalized academic advising, assisting with class registration, and closely monitoring the progress of each student-athlete. She also actively contributes to the smooth transition of incoming student-athletes to the university environment by facilitating orientation and pre-registration processes.

Gabbriell is also the moderator for Student Athletes for Social Justice (SA4SJ), a club committed to fostering a more inclusive environment for student-athletes, coaches, staff, and administrators at Loyola University Maryland. SA4SJ focuses on promoting awareness and support for marginalized groups, including the Black Lives Matter movement and LGBTQ+ communities. Notably, SA4SJ was honored in 2022 with the Ignition Medal for Outstanding Commitment to Diversity and Social Justice, along with the Diversity Equity and Inclusion award, acknowledging our dedication to promoting diversity and social justice within the university community.

Beyond her role in Student-Athlete Support Services, she also serves as a mentor in the ALANA Sister-to-Sister program. Within the program, Gabbriell engages with students who identify as women of color by fostering a nurturing environment where meaningful discussions take place and support networks are established. As a moderator for SA4SJ and Sister-to-Sister mentor, Gabbriell had the privilege of serving on the Planning Committee for the Women of Color Retreat. This retreat was designed with a clear mission: to cultivate a nurturing environment where women of color within our university community could come together to build connections, engage in meaningful reflection, and empower one another. Throughout the planning journey, she collaborated closely with her fellow committee members, engaging in lively brainstorming sessions and making collective decisions to ensure the retreat's success.

Lastly, Gabbriell also serves as a Messina Mentor, offering guidance and encouragement to students as they navigate their first year of college.

When asked what motivates her passion for DEIJ, she said, “As a person of color, my passion for DEIJ work comes from my own life experiences and understanding the larger societal issues at play. I'm motivated to challenge the systems that perpetuate inequality and ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Witnessing discrimination firsthand has inspired me to advocate for change and fight for justice. I believe in standing together, showing empathy, and amplifying every voice to create inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and accepted.”

Black Kids Go Fast by Joshua Rafferty

Joshua Rafferty is a senior at Loyola University Maryland and a member of the Men's Rowing team. In May 2023, Joshua, along with other student-athletes from across the country, attended the Black Student-Athlete Summit in Los Angeles, California. Below is an excerpt from an article he wrote highlighting his experience as a member of the rowing community, the personal experiences of his peers, and his suggestions for ways to increase diversity and inclusion in the rowing sports community.

"Last summer, I had the privilege of attending the Black Student-Athlete Summit in Los Angeles, CA. At the conference, there were over 500 varsity student-athletes across all NCAA divisions. I had the honor of meeting the most talented, hard-working, smart, and kind people with whom I have ever interacted. As I met track runner after track runner, I began to wonder where the rowers were. There were probably five of us in total. I was the only person to represent men’s rowing, and the other few were women rowing in the NCAA. On the first day, I sat in a seminar that discussed athletes finding their identities after sports. Towards the end, we began to talk about the communities in our sports, and how relying on those can help us with our identities after our careers. This was when my hand shot up. I inquired about oftentimes being the only Black face at the boathouse and asked for ways I could try and connect with other Black rowers. Before any panelist could speak, a Loyola Marymount administrator, Bobby Thompson, asked everyone to pause for a moment. He then said, 'Who here was surprised when they heard Josh did rowing as his sport?' Every person in the room raised their hand." Click here to read the full article.
