Departmental and Student Organizations Edition

As the second month of the year, February continues to embody themes of renewal and rebirth, marking the last full month of the winter season before the transition into spring. In February, outside the Gregorian calendar, many nations and cultures worldwide celebrate the start of the new year. It is also a time that marks the start of faith-based traditions that call for introspection, prayer, and faithful intention.

As many of us continue to find our footing, the Office of Equity and Inclusion invites you to intentionally engage with the month of February. To support these endeavors, check out these departments and student organizations for upcoming opportunities for all:

Education and Resource Survey

NOW OPEN - Closes Feb. 10, 2026

Loyola University Maryland remains committed to strengthening our efforts to prevent, educate about, and respond to sexual and gender-based misconduct. As part of this commitment—and in compliance with the Maryland state law—we invite all Loyola community members to participate in the anonymous Sexual Violence Prevention, Education, and Response Survey beginning Jan. 20, 2026. (Please note: Contractors are not included in this survey.)

Survey Details

Why Your Voice Matters
Your feedback helps us improve policies, prevention strategies, and support resources. This survey is conducted in compliance with the Maryland state law requiring institutions to collect and report results to the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Both Loyola and the State of Maryland use this information to monitor trends and strengthen advocacy efforts. Previous survey data has led to meaningful changes, including expanded Title IX intake officers, increased outreach, and resources for underrepresented communities. Participation is voluntary, and confidentiality is of utmost importance—all responses are anonymous.

Incentives: Weekly Raffle Prizes!
As a thank you for participating, Loyola community members who complete the survey will have the opportunity to enter a raffle for a prize!

Weekly raffle drawings will take place on Feb. 4 and Feb. 10. Each drawing will include prizes for at least two students and one employee! Prizes include Legos, Meal Points, and Gift Cards.

To enter, community members may complete the separate entry form provided at the end of the survey. Please note: Raffle entry information is collected separately and is not connected to survey responses.

Black History Through Film is a R.I.S.E. movie night series that uses storytelling on screen to explore the lived experiences, struggles, and resistance of Black communities across time. Through powerful films, we examine how history, identity, and systemic inequality shape everyday life, and how storytelling can be a tool for truth-telling, reflection, and action. Each screening invites students to not only watch, but to think critically, engage in dialogue, and connect the stories on screen to broader conversations about justice today.

Film Screening: The Hate U Give
This film explores police violence, youth activism, and the criminalization of Black life through the eyes of a young Black girl navigating grief, courage, and voice. It offers an accessible yet powerful entry point into conversations about racial injustice, media narratives, and the role of young people in movements for change.

Presented by Dr. Thomas Ward, Professor Emeritus of Spanish

When the Spanish finally defeated Peru's ruling Inka class in 1571, the novel was banned, and Peru's first native-born writer Inka Garcilaso de la Vega was also eventually suppressed. In this, colonial subjects were not allowed to explore who they were, a cultural injustice. After Independence in 1821, writers solely began to perceive that they were no longer Spaniards; the long period of censorship had ended; and they were now free to read Cervantes's Don Quijote as well as Inca Garcilaso's Inkan chronicles. Discussing his new book, Thomas Ward will bring four of Garcilaso's nineteenth-century readers into focus as they established Garcilasian methodologies for recovering the strands of Peruvian-ness that had unjustly been covered over by colonialism.

Important Announcement!
With the new date of February 12th, please be sure to update your RSVP count if you can't make it.

Carla Hayden, Ph.D. will deliver the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation address at Loyola University Maryland on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall West.

A lifelong advocate for literacy and public service, Carla Hayden, Ph.D., champions the power of libraries as spaces for connection, opportunity, education, and transformation. She is the former Librarian of Congress, served as president of the American Library Association, and led the Enoch Pratt Free Library as CEO for more than two decades. Hayden made history in 2016 when she was sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress—the first woman and first African American to lead the nation’s library. She reimagined the Library of Congress as a dynamic, inclusive institution that connects all Americans to knowledge, creativity, and history. Her leadership has focused on access, equity, and storytelling. Today, Hayden—who is a recipient of Loyola’s prestigious Andrew White Medal—is a senior fellow for the Mellon Foundation and continues to pursue scholarship, writing, and research.

The event will also be live-streamed on YouTube, with closed captioning provided.

This event is part of the Peace & Justice Bunting Speaker Series and is free and open to the public, although advance registration is encouraged.

Celebrating its 32nd year, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation is an opportunity for Loyola and the Baltimore community to come together and launch the spring semester and New Year with a shared inquiry into issues of social justice, politics, spirituality, and the legacies of race and racial justice in America.

The convocation is co-sponsored by the Office of the President, Office of Equity and Inclusion, Office of Peace & Justice, the Karson Institute for Race, Peace & Social Justice, Messina, and the African and African American Studies Program.

Persons with disabilities who may require special services should contact the Office of Disability and Accessibility Services at 410-617-2062 (TDD) or 410-617-2141 at least 48 hours before the event.

"What We Do, We’ve Always Done" highlights the rich and often overlooked legacy of Black cowboy culture in Maryland and the surrounding region. Through paintings, photography, and video, Edwards offers an intimate look at Black riders, their traditions, and the landscapes that sustain them. Rooted in more than two years of immersive research, including conversations with riders whose stories span from before the Civil War to today, the exhibition celebrates Black leisure and the joy, pride, and resilience embedded in these traditions. Edwards challenges narrow narratives about who belongs in American cowboy culture, affirming the essential role Black horsemen and horsewomen continue to play. At its heart, the exhibition is both a celebration and a reclamation, honoring generations of Black riders whose presence has shaped community, culture, and a living American tradition.

All Julio Fine Arts Gallery programming is free and open to the public.

Join us for a unique experience exploring the life and impact of Frederick Douglass. The chartered bus trip will first take us to Frederick Douglass’ House (https://www.nps.gov/frdo/index.htm) in Washington, DC to explore the place where he lived from 1877 until his death in 1895. Here he composed some of his most impactful speeches.

Next, we will visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) – featuring the amazing 5-channel video piece Lesson of the Hour about Frederick Douglass by artist Isaac Julien (https://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/isaac-julien).

"Julien weaves together reenacted scenes from Douglass’ life and lectures, filming at his historic home in Washington, DC, and a restaged studio of famed Black photographer J.P. Ball (1825–1904) as he makes a portrait of Douglass. Images of contemporary Baltimore—the city where Douglass was enslaved and escaped from bondage in 1838—including footage of fireworks and protests in 2015 following the death of Freddie Gray, Jr. while in police custody, are interspersed as the struggle to make good on America’s promise of equality continues."

This trip is free. Tickets to Frederick Douglass’ House are Included. Students will be given money to eat lunch in Chinatown, DC. SAAM is a free museum.
